The slow shower is the most ignored drain problem in Perth
Nobody books a plumber the first morning the water pools around their ankles. The shower still works, after all. So the plug of hair and soap scum keeps compacting, the biofilm creeps further down the branch line, and months later the same shower is the one backing up with grey water — or worse, the lowest point in the house when the main sewer blocks.

What actually blocks a shower drain
Hair + soap = concrete. Hair on its own would mostly wash through. Bound with soap scum and body oils it forms a dense, elastic plug that grips the waste grate crossbars and trap walls. This accounts for most of the shower blockages we clear, from new builds in Joondalup to renovated beach cottages in Watermans Bay.
Biofilm. The pink-grey slime that coats shower wastes is a living bacterial film. It narrows the waste over time, smells musty when disturbed and regrows quickly after superficial cleaning — proper mechanical clearing has to remove it, not just rinse the surface.
Old branch lines. In Perth’s 50s-70s housing stock — think Melville and Duncraig — shower branch lines are often original galvanised or early plastic, internally rough with decades of scale. Rough walls catch hair and soap far faster than smooth modern PVC, which is why a renovated bathroom on original drainage can still behave like a 1965 shower.
The problem that isn’t the shower. Gurgling, smells and backflow through the shower waste frequently have nothing to do with the shower itself. Because the shower waste sits at floor level — usually the lowest fixture in the wet areas — it’s where a blocked sewer main announces itself first. If flow doesn’t fully restore, the restriction is deeper, and we jet the branch line through to the main drain with high-pressure water jetting so the whole run is clean, not just the first metre.
For showers that keep slowing down no matter how often they’re cleared, a CCTV camera inspection of the branch line settles the question. Scale-choked galvanised, a bellied section holding water, or roots at the junction all look completely different on screen, and each has a different, correctly-priced fix — from descaling to a patch reline.
