When the sewer blocks, the clock starts
Every drain in your home — toilets, showers, sinks, the washing machine — feeds a single pipe: the sewer main running from the house to the street connection. When that one pipe blocks, the whole house is blocked, and waste water starts looking for the lowest exit. Outside, that’s the overflow relief gully doing its job. Inside, if the gully can’t cope or has been paved over, it’s the shower recess and floor wastes.

How we clear Perth sewer mains
We jet, we don’t just poke. High-pressure water jetting drives a cutting head through root masses and scours grease and sludge off the full pipe wall, flushing debris downstream to the authority main. An electric eel might restore a trickle; jetting restores the pipe.

Why Perth sewers block
Roots, roots, roots. The older metro suburbs — Melville, Gosnells, inner-city Northbridge — still run earthenware sewer laterals laid between the 1900s and the 1970s. Every Perth home connected to sewer should have an overflow relief gully — a grated fitting, usually near an outside tap or the laundry wall, set lower than your indoor floor level. When the main blocks, it releases waste water outside instead of through your bathroom. Two things go wrong with them: they get buried under garden beds and paving (removing your home’s protection), and their loose grates get stuck down or sealed (same effect).
